Complementary Therapy at Revive MS Support
We have two complementary therapists at Revive. Together they provide a range of treatments that may help your overall physical and mental well-being.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness of breathing is simply being aware of your breath and being aware of what is happening in the present moment.
It enables you to be aware of your thoughts as they arise and just to note them without judgement. Often, we concentrate on the future which can create anxiety, or the past which can result in regret. As a result, we can forget to experience today. As you practise mindfulness and become more aware of your breathing, you can extend this to other activities and relationships in your life. This can help you become more alert and relaxed when dealing with everyday situations.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a treatment that uses pure and natural essential oils to promote health, well-being, and relaxation. At Revive, we use aromatherapy in the form of body massage which our therapists will tailor to suit each person’s individual needs. You can have your massage either seated or lying on a massage table. Our therapists will also happily advise on how aromatherapy can be used at home.
Possible benefits of aromatherapy:
- Reduced muscle spasms
- Reduction of pain levels
- Improved sleep pattern
- Increased joint flexibility and range of movement
- General feeling of well-being and calmness
- Relief from altered sensation
Reflexology
In reflexology, pressure is applied to the reflexes or points on the feet or hands, which correspond to the various areas of the body. It is believed that this can have a calming effect on the central nervous system which improves the feeling of relaxation and well-being.
The NHS sanctioned reflexology for people with MS in October 2003. Reflexology can help reduce symptoms including chronic pain and headaches.
Possible benefits of reflexology:
- Improved circulation
- Relief from altered sensations such as pins and needles in the feet (paraesthesia)
- Relief from a heavy feeling in the legs
- Improved posture and balance as the body relaxes
- Reduction in pain and spasms
- Improved digestive function
- Improved skin condition
- Increased energy levels
