For more than 30 years, Basharat worked as a GP, diagnosing and supporting patients through life-changing conditions, including multiple sclerosis. Then, unexpectedly, he found himself navigating his own MS diagnosis. In this honest and emotional interview, Basharat shares the reality of living with MS and the difference Revive MS Support has made to his life.

Watch Basharat’s Story

Basharat was diagnosed with rapidly evolving severe MS following two relapses in just three months. The shift from doctor to patient was immediate and overwhelming.

I got home and luckily I was the only one in the house at that time and I cried my eyes out.

Part of me feels a bit disappointed in myself that I didn’t even think of MS… I recognise it and I’m actually quite a strong person, but emotionally it had taken over me.

MS quickly became something that couldn’t be neatly understood or controlled. For Basharat, the unpredictability of symptoms was one of the hardest realities to adjust to.

People talk about good days and bad days. MS is actually a condition which can vary from hour to hour.

After a period of any form of tiredness… my left side will start becoming weaker for me and then I struggle.

People who don’t know you may just think he looks absolutely fine…I don’t mind anyone saying that because I want to look absolutely fine

Finding support through Revive

It was during an appointment with his MS nurse that Basharat first heard about Revive MS Support. At the time, he wasn’t sure what a charity could offer him.

Initially, I was thinking, how are they going to help me? And I was wrong…
Revive is part of my life now. The benefits of it, especially for me, have been huge.

Over the years, Basharat has accessed services such as physiotherapy, complementary therapies, exercise classes, podiatry, counselling and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

A different perspective on life with MS

Before his diagnosis, Basharat’s experience of MS came through caring for his patients. Today, he understands the condition from a very different perspective.

Initially when I used to feel that having the diagnosis of MS was likened to a life sentence for me, I actually now embrace everything.

Sometimes I feel as if I’m the luckiest person alive…and places like Revive MS help me. As long as I’m standing up, I want to keep fighting.

Support from Revive

Basharat speaks openly about the importance of funding and continued support and generosity for a charity like Revive so that others can access the same MS specialist help and support that isn’t available elsewhere.

If I was to plead to anyone who has money…helping people like me, make me the man again, give them the money. Help Revive, because all they do is help people like me.

Basharat’s story is a moving reminder that no one should have to face MS alone. Every day, people come to Revive MS Support looking for support that helps them stay active, maintain their independence, and navigate the challenges that MS can bring. With your support, we can continue providing specialist physical, emotional, financial and social support to people living with MS across Scotland.
