For Katrina, running has always been about more than just fitness – it’s about taking on challenges and making a difference. This year, she has decided to run the London Marathon to raise funds for Revive MS Support, a charity that has become a vital part of her family’s life since her husband, Ross, was diagnosed with MS.

We chatted with Katrina to find out more about why she has decided to take on the London Marathon and what motivates her fundraising and training efforts.

Before discovering Revive, what kind of support was available for Ross?

To be honest, apart from seeing his NHS MS nurse and Consultant at appointments, Ross was very hesitant to attend any other support groups or seek out help.

How has Revive made a difference to Ross’s life since he started attending?

Ross has now finally spoken to others living with MS which he had never done before. It’s been good for him to compare stories etc. He is currently attending weekly meetings with a counsellor to help him speak about what he is going through and how he is feeling.

He enjoys his Wednesday’s at Revive as it has helped him remain independent by taking the journey to the centre on the train and the subway, as I’m unable to drive him there due to the times and my own work commitments.

What made you decide to apply for the London Marathon place, and did you expect it to lead to such a personal connection with the charity?

“I saw the Facebook post about Revive places and although I did consider it, the thought of the level of fundraising was pretty daunting. However, my mother-in-law, Isabel and friend, Norah encouraged me to enter with the promise that they would help. Norah was amazing and organised a Ladies afternoon tea and second-hand clothes sale for me. From this alone we have raised over £2100 before my training for the Marathon officially started!

My hope was that by getting involved with the charity, as it was relatively local, that Ross would perhaps seek out the help we could see he needed – and it’s worked thanks to meeting a fellow ‘MSer’ at an event we attended.

What motivated you to take on the challenge of running the London Marathon?

I try to take on a new challenge each year and raise some money for a charity close to our family’s heart. For me to justify asking for sponsors, it has to be big challenge to myself. I completed my first marathon in Manchester in April 2024 and said it would be my only one unless I got a London place.

Do you have any tips for others thinking about taking on a running challenge?

The biggest thing is not to get caught up comparing yourself to others – this can not only result in an injury, but it can also be demotivating – this is YOUR challenge, not theirs.

By all means do it alongside friends as it really helps keep you motivated, especially if it involves long runs of hours on end! I’ve met loads of like-minded people through various running groups, so I’ve been lucky enough to not have to endure a lot of boring solo runs – even if it’s someone joining me for part of it.

Having the advice of a coach and a plan definitely keeps you accountable as well as helping to prevent injury.

Test everything out before race day – kit and nutrition (for both before and during the event)”

Are there any pieces of kit or running essentials you’ve found particularly helpful?

“A good pair of shoes is a must – usually recommended after a having a gait analysis at a running store. I’m currently trying to find my newest ones!

Also, bone conducting headphones so that you can listen to that all important music, book or podcast while out and you are still aware of your surroundings.

The list could be never ending but finding what’s right for you is what’s most important. Finding the right nutrition, hydration, clothing, etc is all very personal.

What would you say to someone in a similar situation who is supporting a loved one with MS – who hasn’t yet reached out for support?

Making that first step can be very daunting and might take time but it’ll honestly be worth it when you do. The opportunities available at Revive are vast and when I’ve spoken to others about it, they have been amazed at what’s on offer.

It might even be something you didn’t think of before that helps.”

What message would you like to share with others about the impact Revive has had on your family?

“I can honestly say that this is the first charity that I’ve raised money for that has been in contact to this level. Having actually met some of team at Revive it makes it more personal.”
