With multiple family members and friends affected by Multiple Sclerosis, and a professional background as an Occupational Therapist, Lianne has always had a connection to the MS community. This has been a catalyst in her decision to not only take on her role as Trustee for Revive MS Support, but also to take on the incredible challenge of the London Marathon to help raise vital funds for Revive.

“MS has been a huge part of my personal and professional life”

Lianne’s awareness of MS began in the 1980s when her Aunt Janice was diagnosed. “At that point, there wasn’t the same understanding of the condition or treatments we have now,” Lianne recalls. Her Aunt attended Revive for hyperbaric oxygen in the early days of the charity when Revive was based in Maryhill.  Two of her other Aunts, Mhairi and Irene also had MS.

Today, Lianne knows seven people in their 30s, 40s, and early 50s who live with MS, and through her career as an Occupational Therapist, she has worked with many more. Last year, after celebrating her 50th birthday, Lianne wanted to give back.

“I noticed Revive MS were looking for a trustee, and I decided to apply for this voluntary role. In the short time I’ve been involved, I’ve learned so much about the range of services available and how hard it is to fundraise and keep those services running.”

Having ran the London Marathon once before in 2019, Lianne was thrilled to get a place this year.

“I loved the experience the first time. The training is tough, but knowing I’m fundraising for a charity so close to my heart keeps me motivated, especially on those wet, cold, dark January nights when I’m pounding the streets!”

“If you’ve never visited Revive, I’d highly recommend it. From the moment you walk through the door, you’re greeted with a bright, friendly environment. The café area is a lovely place for a cuppa and a chat. The range of services (including physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, counselling, and hyperbaric oxygen) is tailored to each individual’s needs.”

Marathon training is a huge undertaking at the best of times, but Lianne’s journey has been especially challenging recently after her husband suffered a stroke and spent three weeks in hospital.

“My running took a back seat for a while recently, but running has been great therapy for me. It’s helping my mental and physical health. Sometimes the weather’s too icy to run, so I use an exercise bike at home. I figure it’s still building my leg strength – better than nothing! Right now, I’m up to 12 miles and building towards that 26.2-mile goal. Alongside running, I’m focusing on core strength and injury prevention with a tailored exercise programme and pilates classes.”

For those considering running for Revive in the future, Lianne shares some valuable advice:

  • Find a running buddy: “The long runs are easier with company. I run once a week with a friend when we can. The run-and-chat approach works for me!
  • Mix up your music: “A friend suggested making an hour-long playlist to keep things interesting on longer runs. It’s a tip I’m definitely going to try.
  • Invest in good kit: “Supportive running shoes are essential along with breaking them in well ahead of race day. Two-layer running socks help prevent blisters, and comfy, lightweight layers are a must for Scottish weather.
  • Take care of your feet: “Heel balm, neat toenails, and a pre-race visit to a podiatrist can make all the difference.
  • Stay visible: “A reflective running jacket and light are essential for those dark evening runs.
  • Fuel your training: “A healthy diet and proper hydration are crucial, and while it’s tempting to reach for a chocolate bar, keeping balanced nutrition will help your endurance.”
  • Manage injuries early: “Physiotherapy can help keep niggles under control and prevent more serious issues.

“Living with MS can feel like running a marathon every day. For a lot of people, it takes a huge amount of physical and emotional strength just to get through each day. That’s why the support that Revive provides is so vital.”
