Winter can be a challenging time for many people living with MS. Some notice more stiffness, pain, or fatigue when the weather turns cold, while others find their mood is affected by darker days.
We’ve put together some simple winter wellbeing tips to help you stay warm, comfortable, and supported in the colder months, from keeping active indoors and layering up, to looking after your mental health.
Everyone’s experience with MS is unique, so it’s all about finding what works best for you. Take things at your own pace, and remember that small changes can make a big difference.
When it’s cold, some people with MS notice their symptoms change. Stiffness, pain, and mobility challenges can become more noticeable, and your body may take longer to warm up again.
Layer up with lightweight, warm fabrics like thermal tops of fleeces. Keep feet and hands covered, these areas loose heat fastest.
Gentle movement can help manage stiffness and boost circulation. Try stretching indoors, yoga, or short walks if it’s safe to go outdoors. If you use mobility aids, make sure they are winter-ready, think non-slip grips.
Cold weather and darker days can sometimes affect your mood. Stay connected, call a friend, join an online group, or visit our centre.
Light therapy lamps and getting outdoors during the daylight can also help lift your energy.
Everyone’s experience with MS is different. Listen to your body, take things at your own pace, and reach out if you need support.
